Looping Puffin

Monday, November 5, 2007

Thursday 10/4
Departing Island Cove, we are looking forward to our next destination of Chattanooga but first Puffin must encounter Chickamauga lock(mile 471). Prior to our arrival to the lock, we hear from the lockmaster that there will be at least a 2 to 3 hour delay as he is locking a large set of barges. We decide to wait it out at Chickamauga Marina(mile 471.4) where we hang out at the air conditioned marina store. ( If you haven't guessed by now, it's been unseasonably hot down here) The 2 to 3 hours turns into 4 or 5 but we are eventually notified that Puffin can be locked down the 48' to Nickajack Lake. It is now approaching sunset and we still have about 7 miles to downtown Chattanooga, so Puffin steps it up to nearly 10 miles per hour(thanks in part to the accelerated current behind the dam). So with pedal to the medal, we finally arrive right at dark along the transient linear docks of Chattanooga's downtown waterfront(mile 464.2)
