Tuesday 10/2
This morning we decide to go up Piney River(mile 532.3) as it is described as one of Tennessee's hidden delights. While up the river, we stop at Spring City Boat Dock where Puffin takes on fuel, water and ice. Upon leaving Piney River, we soon come upon Watts Bar Lock(mile529.9) which lowers Puffin down 59' to the next impounded section of the Tennessee called Chickamauga Lake. (Since we are going downstream, the name of the lake we enter is for the upcoming lock.) The site of the lock is not only a hydroelectric dam, but also another TVA nuclear power plant. At mile 499.4, we discover the Hiwassee River, one of the Tennessee's largest tributaries and part of the TennesseeWildlife Refuge system. As we enter the river, we are treated to a beautiful blend of land and seascape. Upon anchoring, Royce and I take a swim, have cocktails and explore the area by dinghy.
